A town named for flat ground
The Handbook of Texas records that Charles W. Post surveyed the townsite in 1912 as "Hockley City," that development began when Hockley County organized in 1921, and that the town was renamed Levelland in 1922 for its flat topography. Santa Fe trains arrived in July 1925, the 1950s oil boom brought a refinery and gas plant, and South Plains College opened in 1958.
That flatness matters when it rains hard. Water on the South Plains collects in shallow playa basins rather than running off quickly. During the September 2008 storms that set Lubbock's 24-hour rainfall record, National Weather Service Storm Data noted a home in Levelland threatened by a swollen playa. Standing water near a foundation, a wet crawl area or soaked carpet is exactly the kind of moisture the EPA warns about: its mold guide says to dry water-damaged areas and items "within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth."
Levelland homes by the numbers
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020–2024) puts Levelland at about 12,466 residents, the largest town in the area outside Lubbock itself. The median home was built in 1976, so a typical house is now around 50 years old, with roofs, supply lines, water heaters and window flashing that may have been patched or replaced more than once.
- Owner-occupied: 66.7% of occupied homes, which leaves about a third rented.
- Hockley County: 15.6% of housing units are mobile homes, a larger share than in Lubbock County (4.7%).
- Rain pattern: at the Lubbock airport, about 63% of the yearly total falls May through September, mostly in thunderstorms.
In homes of this age, mold calls usually trace back to a slow plumbing leak, a roof leak after a storm, or water that reached the house after a heavy rain. See our pages on water leak and slab leak mold and flood and water damage mold for what usually happens next.
How a Levelland mold job usually works
Texas Occupations Code chapter 1958 separates the two roles. A licensed mold assessor looks at the problem and writes a remediation protocol. A different licensed remediator does the work; §1958.155 says the assessor and remediator on the same project must be separate, and no one may own an interest in both. After the work, a licensed assessor checks for clearance, and the owner should receive a Certificate of Mold Damage Remediation (TDI form MDR-1) within 10 days. Renting in Levelland? Texas Property Code §92.052 requires a landlord to make a diligent effort to repair a condition that materially affects an ordinary tenant's health or safety once proper notice is given. The statute does not mention mold by name, so read it or get legal advice before relying on it. This is general information, not legal advice.

Levelland mold questions
Do I need a licensed company for mold in my Levelland house?
Not always. Texas Occupations Code §1958.102(e) lets homeowners work on their own home without a license at any size. If you hire a company, it needs a TDLR license once the mold covers 25 contiguous square feet. EPA's separate advice is that patches under about 10 square feet are usually a do-it-yourself job. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can water from a playa or heavy rain cause mold in a Levelland home?
Yes, if water gets inside and stays. The EPA says water-damaged areas and items should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. After any flooding near the house, check carpet, baseboards, lower drywall and closets, and keep track of what got wet so an assessor can see the full picture.
Is Levelland covered even though it is in Hockley County?
Yes. You can request free quotes from Levelland and the rest of Hockley County the same way Lubbock County homeowners do. Tell us what you are seeing and we will help you get quotes from licensed local pros. When you check a license on TDLR's site, you can search by county or by the company's name.
